Our Christmas tree was delivered the morning after our big night in bed when I was inside my baby boy for the first time.
I brought Christmas decorations down from the attic. Iâd accumulated a lot over the years, though mostly when I was younger. I didnât have a tree every year, but now that I had Sullivan, if he stayed as my forever boy, Iâd be sure to give him a well-deserved Christmas every year.
Sullivan was in full on little mode, except for his clothing. That was on my list of things to get him. And maybe Santa would bring some things, as well.
Sullivan jumped up and down, clapping his hands together as I stacked the boxes by the tree. I made him wait while I put the lights on first, and he could not contain himself. I tried to get him to sit and color. I had a special Christmas coloring book and everything. But he couldnât focus. He ran around the room in incessant circles making zoom-zoom noises one moment and singing Jingle Bells the next.
âSweetheart, slow down before you run into something and hurt yourself. Iâll be done in a minute.â
He stomped his foot. âYouâre taking too long. Youâre being too neat.â
âWhat? Did I just hear those words come from your mouth? You want everything organized all the time.â
âI canât wait, Daddy. Itâs killing me.â He put his arm to his forehead in a dramatic gesture, then slumped to the floor and played dead.
âYouâre going to love it when Iâm finished. The lights can be set to blink and run in different directions, change color, or thereâs a mode where they can stay on and not move, too.â
From the floor came a forlorn little voice. âIt will be too late. Iâll be gone for sure. Dead from the zoomies.â
I laughed. âItâs going to be well worth the wait, boy.â
I was glad Sullivan had decided to accept my invitation to stay with me and not go home from now until after Christmas. I had a special gift for him, and I hoped it would not be given too soon. I kept thinking I should wait and not make it a Christmas present, but then I pictured him on Christmas day opening it and throwing his arms around me with joy. I wanted that scenario more than anything.
At last, I climbed down from the ladder. âAll set.â
Sullivan sat up, still on the floor. âThe lights are done?â
âYep. Ready for me to plug them in?â
He clapped his hands. âYay. Letâs do it!â
I flipped the power box button and the tree lit up like a chaotic rainbow. The lights began to chase each other on their strings. It was a work of art.
Sullivan stood up, his mouth open, his eyes wide. He moved beside me and put his hand in mine.
âDaddy, itâs the best tree ever.â
âYou picked it out, remember?â
âI love it.â
âAll right. Now we can put the decorations on.â
âItâs so pretty already it barely needs any.â
I turned to him, frowning. âYou mean I hauled all these boxes of ornaments downstairs for nothing?â
He squeezed my hand.
